G-Prime It's hard to describe an album that is at once so graceful and cohesive, yet so demented. A synthwave core overlaid with heavy elements of prog-rock, punk, even a bit of industrial and rap/hip-hop. All I know is it hits all the right buttons for me: heavy beats, liberal use of distortion, fantastic vocals, and song progressions that are hard to predict yet come across fantastically. Favorite track: LOL she's "fluent in sarcasm".
Watermelon Banzai
Watermelon Banzai thumbnail
Watermelon Banzai The Warhorse is one of the few truly unique synth-infused acts out there so it's hard to classify exactly what they are in turn. Unfortunately, as a consequence to that, they're often left out of the conversation when it comes to talking about the synthwave scene and its numerous subgenres. However, The Warhorse is unapologetic in this regard and simply sneers at such conventions by just doing its own thing and that thing is to release such a genre-defying album like CHUBS which simply kills. Favorite track: Welcome to Los Angeles.

about

The Warhorse is a Silverlake-based retrowave / synthpunk / nihilist-pop band and professional beer consumption unit. To put it more poetically: a post-apocalyptic Rick James industrial fever dream, a tropical dystopia from an alternate future, a detuned analog sunset over an ocean of apathetic heartbeats. (Is that hipster enough for you?) Wrangling influences of 80's party pop, thrashy garage punk, and modern industrial hipstertronica chillwave, The Warhorse thrives on melted synths, destroyed beats, and uncomfortable pitch-shifted vocals. It's kind of dark and rather silly. Rest assured, your parents are gonna HATE it.

TL;DR... THE WARHORSE IS:
- SYNTHY
- DUMB
- ANGSTY
- 100% GLUTEN-FREE.

CHUBS is The Warhorse's feisty full-length debut. 10 sardonic all-new tracks on your choice of 180g vinyl, dual-sided cassette, or old-fashioned computers. LA Music blog said the songs are "nuanced and layered, accessible and atmospheric," while NUBI Magazine calls it "a special mix of mesmerizing and insanity," but honestly, that gives it a lot of credit.

The Warhorse was totally amped to work with mixing/mastering wizard Jason Staniulis at Germano Studios in New York (so basically this album is as good as Yeezus, right?). Not to mention how radically stoked they were when collaborating one some tunes with fine folks like Los Angeles indie rap legend Pigeon John, lending his sharp drawl to "Do Work" and giving it a blast of retro-summer vibes; leader of North Carolina's original Permanent Vacation Deep Fried Family, Rapper Shane, aka Stranger Day, dropped some phat rhymes (that sounds natural for us to say, yeah?) on "Turnt"; and Aaron Leibowitz made our panties drop with his sultry sax on a cover of The Weeknd's "High for This" before heading out on tour with ZHU this past spring.

We hope you enjoy. Though not too much; it'd be cause for concern.

Track Name: LOL she's "fluent in sarcasm"
it's such a beautiful day
it's such a beautiful day outside
the sun is shining
it'll be alright
she's such a beautiful girl
she's such a beautiful girl inside
the sun is shining
but i can taste the night
Track Name: Lately
lately i'm not sleeping
i'm not breathing without machine
lately my heart's been breaking
my heart's been breaking through the seams
shut me off
shut me up
Track Name: Lollapalo$er
all them basic biddies lined up round the block
urban outfitters neon halter tops
untrimmed bangs to hide bloodshot eyes
with molly dreams and hollow minds

something in the night is calling her out
red lights spotted upon the bow
her sailor's tongue knows naught but the obscene
my ratchet queen, my ratchet queen

all she wants to know is when will the bass drop
menthol cigarettes when she's completely sauced
2 chainz lyrics tattooed on her inner thigh
more meat stuffed in her than a shepherd's pie

something in the night keeps calling her name
echoes in the turnt up hall of fame
swallowing the trap like it's soylent green
my ratchet queen
my ratchet dream

Track Name: doot
thought we were dancing in the waves
we were standing in our graves
bleaching in the malibu sun
i heard you starting to say
that you're liking the way
the ocean breeze feels through your chest
isn't it funny the face
with our flesh peeled back
our heart beating sounds way fainter now
before they smash us to dust
or the worms eat us up
we gotta break from this pinewood city

we're dried up
calcium and collagen is all that's left of all our friends
we're dried up
and all the taphonomic studies say we better get our asses out of this place

eye sockets sallow and tired
china limbs clattering hard
we're tryna dance before they're cleaning out their closets
our bones are white like the sun
our future's in museums
they're tryna figure out our living and our mating habits
how can we ever relax
the constant clicking and clacks
don't understand the physics of what's holding us together
and we dream of the days
we'll watch the sunset and say
do you remember what we used to put ourselves through

a girl and kids
fresh coat of skin
we'll run our hands through our hair
the brisk sting of mountain air
small lives small town
v chill friends round
we gotta hope that our souls
don't flee through the gaps in our bones

we're dried up
calcium and collagen is all that's left of all our friends
we're dried up
and all the taphonomic studies say we better get our asses out of this place
Track Name: High for This (feat. Aaron Staniulis)
You don't know what's in store
But you know what you're here for
Close your eyes
Lay yourself beside me
Hold tight
For this ride
We don't need no protection
Come on love
We don't need attention

Open your hand
Take a glass
Don't be scared
I'm right here
Even though
You don't roll
Trust me girl
You wanna be high for this

Take it off
You want it off
'Cause I know what you're feeling
It's okay, Girl I feel it too
Let it beat
Baby breathe
I swear I'm right here
We'll be good
I promise, we'll be so good

Open your hand
Take a glass
Don't be scared
I'm right here
Even though
You don't roll
Trust me girl
You wanna be high for this
Track Name: Do Work (feat. Pigeon John & Chris Henry)
work all day play all night
i know what you really like
Track Name: Welcome to Los Angeles
we could talk about the weather
we could spend the night together
could we make this last forever

i'm surrounded by all these beautiful people
who haven't said one thing i wished i'd heard
every syllable is like having teeth pulled
but they know game of thrones word for word

and i won't find
someone to prove me wrong

i guess we're back to the weather
dialogue neither crass nor clever
this half-filled beer is keeping me tethered
is there nothing there whatsoever?

she made me breakfast and i spent some money
we called the car service to get us back to town
holy hell do we have aspirin honey
somehow we both knew it wouldn't work out

and i won't find
someone to prove me wrong
